West Tamar Council includes the area of Northern Tasmania west of the Tamar River between Launceston and Bass Strait. It includes townships, tourism destinations, natural features and part of the Tamar Valley Wine Region. FFLA worked closely with Council to prepare a trails strategy for the region that seeks to provide active transport links and recreation opportunities for local residents as well as an opportunity to showcase the region to visitors. A range of trail types are covered including walking trails, shared paths and on-road cycling routes. The development of the strategy included walking or riding all of the existing trails (including the very important task of visiting some wineries along the way). Detailed mapping of the existing and proposed trails was undertaken, along with engaging with a wide range of stakeholders. An important outcome of the project was to prioritise the trails to help guide the development of a the trail network over time.
