The Millgrove River Walking Trail is a walking path of just over 400 metres length running alongside the Yarra River in Millgrove. The trail project was initiated by the local community who gained a state government grant to deliver their vision. FFLA worked closely with the Yarra Ranges Council in addressing the wide range of challenges associated with sensitively integrating a path into an area of flood-prone riverside vegetation, including the use of raised boardwalks over boggy areas and to avoid tree root disturbance. The project allows people to appreciate the beauty of the riverside environment while safeguarding the natural values.
The path was always envisioned as a route that could be used by as many people as possible. Following the completion of the path, Council received a letter from a long-term resident of Millgrove who had been house-bound for many years due to ill-health. Having regained some mobility via a mobility scooter he visited the path and reported that “…the experience of being able to move through the bush again was a profoundly moving experience”.
