The Eastern Regional Trails Strategy was prepared to provide the strategic direction required to allow local government and other land management authorities to work together towards an interconnected and well-used shared trail network. The strategy concentrates on regional trails and covers seven municipalities that together make up a quarter of Melbourne's total population. The study area ranged from the heavily urbanised Boroondara in the west, to the rural areas of Yarra Ranges in the east. The strategy document is the culmination of a process that involved intensive engagement with local government, Sport and Recreation Victoria (who were a funding partner), communities and stakeholders. The project outcomes were also informed by a comprehensive physical audit (by bicycle) of all of the hundreds of kilometres of existing regional trails.
